If you've forgotten why we still need an International Women's Day, please read this article by Mariella Frostrup, a TV presenter and Observer newspaper columnist. Some reminders are:
-
*Two-thirds of children denied school are girls
-
*64% of the world's illiterate adults are women
-
*41m girls are still denied a primary education
-
*75% of civilians killed in war are women and children
-
*And closer to home, only 12% of the UK's boardroom seats (as compared to Norway's 34%) are occupied by women. UK's percetage of women on Boards is lower than South Africa's, Israel's, Philippines'...to name just a few countries.
Just a few reasons why women's equality should remain a high priority, even in the UK.
So on this day, can I ask you all to promote the value of women in society and in the workplace [ie having at least 30% women on Boards or in senior management leads to significant financial outperformance when compared to organisations with few women in leadership]. The complementary skills that women bring help create a more balanced world and more profitable companies.
Happy International Women's day everyone!
