    Last night CIMA student Howard Ebison became the latest of the remaining six candidates in the (UK) BBC TV series The Apprentice to be fired.

    The 12-week competition sets the candidates through a gruelling series of tasks and the first prize is the job of Sir Alan Sugar's apprentice, with a six figure salary.

    It is a big help if we have a choice of school, distance and home studying. Being able to attend to classes might be very beneficial for many of us. I have experience in both home and school studying and I would say that both are valuable.

    By putting myself in different situations I learnt not only from my books but also about myself. I am able to identify my strengths and weaknesses and work with them. But what should I do when, after careful selection of school and considerable amount of private funds spent, I meet my disappointment in the figure of the teacher?

    Day 2 at the Innovation Summit: Brian Steinhobel, owner of the design firm bearing his surname Steinhobel Design shared his 3 decades of design successes, failures, hopes and failures for South Africa. My take aways were that the shortage of design and tooling infrastructure on the ground which are necessary for the innovation ecosystem to thrive are in short supply.

    Day 1 of the Innovation Summit in Johannesburg got off to good start with Eskom discussing their open innovation pilot project showcasing South African corporate innovation. Results from the pilot are not yet public but Eskom managers after initial scepticism are pushing for the next round.

    This weekend saw the climax of the CIMA Global Business Challenge 2011 as the finals took place over two days in Chengdu, China with teams from 17 regions worldwide competing to be named champions in this showcase of aspiring business talent. In turn, CIMA provided realtime coverage of the event using social media with staff co-ordinating via web and mobile in China and London.

    As a software start-up building on the Azure cloud, we’re part of the Microsoft BizSpark community. At their last event, there was live video streaming and Twitter interaction throughout. You didn’t need to be in the room to be part of the event and its conversations.

    The golf fanatics amongst you will know that Celtic Manor in Wales, UK was the venue for the Ryder Cup in 2010.  Well, on 5-6 July, it will play host to another golf competition - although I suspect that the standard might not be quite so high.

    But before we are allowed on to the golf course, over 150 CFOs and FDs from across Europe will be getting together to network and discuss current challenges facing finance leaders at the CFO Event.

    This week saw the issues and opportunities raised by Enterprise 2.0 land squarely in the field of vision of management accountants as CIMA's Enterprise Web 2.0 event took place at the Microsoft London offices. Leading experts and practitioners in the enterprise 2.0 and cloud accounting space shared insights, and new research into the topic was unveiled.
