Question about new CIMA bachelor's degree (Manchester Met University)

Hi all,

My name is Rajpal and I am a CIMA student from London.

I was just reading in my copy of PQ Magazine that CIMA is getting together with Manchester Metropolitan University in order to offer degrees. It says a BA (Hons) in Sustainable Performance Management will be offered to students who complete the advanced diploma and an MSc in Business Management will be offered to newly qualified members.

This is of particular interest to me as I left school aged 18 and went straight into CIMA rather than going to university, so it would be useful for me to get a degree in order to fill that gap on my CV and tick that box for recruiters.

However, I have concerns about whether I would be eligible. I am currently studying for the F2 paper, which I plan to sit in May this year. After that, I will have completed the advanced diploma and move up to strategic level. However, the magazine states that students who pass the advanced diploma from June 2011 onwards can sign up for the degree. Therefore, if I pass F2 in May, I will have already passed the advanced diploma before this time, so, will I therefore become inelligible to take the degree?

If this is the case, I may consider postponing my F2 exam until November, as I am very keen to obtain a bachelor's degree. I was already considering completing an Open University or distance learning degree after passing CIMA, but that would take several years, so it would be great if an accelerated route to achieving a degree was available.

Many thanks in advance for any informative replies,

Rajpal

P.s. apologies if I have posted this in the wrong section, I wasn't sure where would be the best place for this topic to go.

Degree

It wouldn't make much sense (and would be very unfair) if it didn't apply to existing Adv Dip holders.  It's not something that you're just given on completion of the Adv Dip; you have to complete some degree modules and pay approx £800 according to the earlier article in the the same magazine.

A few queries...

Hi,

I didn't see this article but am very interested. I didn't do too well in my first BSc (switched university mid-way through as hated living in Leeds + was generally way too lazy / disinterested in my course) - I'd love to get another one, with a better grade!

Does anyone know if this Bsc will be classified / graded like usual Bachelor degrees in UK, i.e. 1st, 2.1, etc.? Also, will grades in the CIMA Managerial papers count towards the degree classification?

Thanks in advance,

Paula

BA (Hons) Sustainable Performance Management

Hi,

Please could someone advise when students will be able to enrol for this course?

http://www.cimaglobal.com/Study-with-us/Combining-CIMA-with-degrees/Manchester-Metropolitan-University/

The above link states that it should be available from July, i.e. now. The Manchester Met website also details the same dates.

Also, how will be the degree be graded? e.g. will CIMA Managerial level results affect the degree classification, or will grading be based purely on performance in the 2 MMU online modules?

Thanks,

Paula

MMU

Hello

I can confirm that you will be able to enrol for this on 18th July 2011.

I do hope that this helps.

Thanks Yetunde

Hi Yetunde,

Thanks for your prompt response (& also for moving my query to a more appropriate board - I wasn't quite sure where best to post it).

Are you able to please provide any info with regards to how this degree will be graded / whether Managerial level marks count towards classification?

Also, will there be specific start dates each year, or can students enrol at any time?

Thanks,

Paula

MMU

Hi

I can confirm that once you have completed the degree it will be classified depending on the grade that you score after completing the MMU modules.

To start off with the degrees will run according to acadamic year e.g the BA will start in September and the Master will start in January 2012.

I do hope that this helps.

Kind Regards

Thanks again

Thanks Yetunde - that's really useful to know & will enable me to schedule my remaining Managerial-level exams more appropriately.

Thanks again,

Paula

Eligibility!

Its good news for students who entered CIMA without any academic qualifications.

However some more clarification regarding the BA(hons) should be provided.

My main concern is that would students who complete the BA(hons) be eligible for entry to various masters degrees? As there are students who want to pursue further education.

Another issue would be that would the BA(hons) and the Advanced Diploma equate to the 180 ECTS points required for entry to various masters degree?

Can someone please enlighten on this issue.

Thanks

Degree classification

Hi Yetunde

I spoke to one of the Senior lecturers at MMU who made me understand that it was a combination / average of the CIMA management level  grades (former P2, P5 & P8) plus the grades achieved on the degree modules that would drive the classification of the degree upon completion.

Could you kindly confirm this or provide some clarity on your response above as my interpretation of your resposne is that its just the degree modules that would drive the classification. Thanks.

Kind regards

Classification

Hi,

When I initially enquired about this I was told that the classification would be based on the MMU modules, however I have now received further information that states the following.

Degree classification is determined by the average of the marks from the 3 CIMA Managerial level papers and the 2 MMU assessed units (subject to confirmation from MMU).

I do apologise about the initial confusion.

Thanks....

Hi Yetunde

Thanks for the clarification which is consistent with what I've been told by the lecturer at MMU.

oxford brookes

doesnt cima have any partner like oxford brookes uiversity as acca does have and they just have to write thesis and have to submit checking fee approximately 90 pounds.

800 are too much, dont u think??

oxford brookes

800 is too much for sure, even if you look at the Robert Gordon University BA Accounting 3500 for top up is even too much. I like the acca / oxford brookes arrangement

oxford brookes

they don't right now but i really hope they enter into some sort of arrangement as acca and oxford brookes have soon. As it is essential for CIMA students.=less money ,and more importantly less time frame to get the degree in..

So is any one opting it?

Im really interested in studying up for degree program. But CIMA has'nt initiated any steps for free course like of Oxford Brookes. RGBU sounds too expensive, like 3500 pounds!..wooohhh! CIMA should reckon over it!

By the way,

Whats the scope of MBA after the BA honors in MMU?

Degree award and classification

Hi all,

There have been a few queries regarding how the BA (Hons) Sustainable Performance Management offered by Manchester Metropolitan University is classified.

Just to clarify, the final mark for the BA Honours degree programme will be calculated as follows:

The average of:

• the weighted mark from the Accounting and Management Control Systems unit – 50% weighting, and
• the weighted mark from Ethics and Sustainability Accounting unit – 50% weighting

Marks from each of the two units in the programme will be given in whole numbers. These marks will be used in the calculation of the overall mark for the BA Honours degree programme, that will be rounded to the nearest whole number.

international student!

I would like to pursue this degree since it is cheaper than the other options I have got.. However I am not sure whether an international student can offer this degree program.

Is it possible for an international student to complete this degree program via distance learning? I would love to do, as I am lacking the degree qualification as most of the students in this post are.

BA Hons Sustainable Perfomance Management

All we need to do is complete CIMA Managerial level and then enroll for the Degree with MMU and do it online. It's possible on distance education

MMU BA Hons Sustainable Perfomance Manangement

Imagine if the above degree was titled "BA (Hons) Finance and Management Accounting". Would it add power to CIMA students! How would CIMA members and students feel like! . Amazing? Fantastic!

Thanks

Hi Deirdre,

Thanks for the confirmation. I think it is fair that only the University modules get taken into account for classification purposes - students who sat Managerial level papers in the past had no incentive to score more than 50%, due to CIMA exams being graded as simply either pass or fail. I feel that it would be unfair for such students to have their degree classification negatively impacted by Managerial paper results, for which there was never any benefit in scoring highly.

Thanks again,

Paula

BA Hons Sustainable Perfomance Management

Hi all, this is very good as l would like to obtain BA degree since l went staright to CIMA and didnt pass through university.wish the RGU has reasonable fees. Can someone advise which of these degrees on offer is carries higher ranking and what are the prospects of getting a job after this?how does  MMU rank in comparison to the other 3? the reason lm asking is because,l have noted that MMU is one of the lowest ranked universities in the uk and almost non existant on the work rankings!my concern is, wont this affect the quality of the degree awarded?especially where employers are concrened, this plays a vital role when selecting candidates for employment.as they would at the awarding university and instantly decide how valuable the qualification is.

I would really be grateful if somebody can give insight?

University of Wales through LSBF offers an online top up Masters to CIMA passed finalist , all u need to do is to complete two online modules and a dessertation and then you have a Masters, a Masters from the Univerity of Wales

Masters

I would like to know more about the above post regarding the University of Wales. Does anyone know how much it costs, do you have to go there?

I do not have a degree so I don't really understand how this works. My understanding is that you get a masters after getting a good grade in a degree. If I understand the above post correctly, does it mean that as a member of CIMA I would bypass the need to have a degree and go straight into getting a masters?  This would make a member and passed finalist having the equivalent of having a degree by virtue of passing all of CIMA's exams. Have I got this right? I would be very grateful if anyone could enlighten me on this.
