Voluntary Work

Hello all..

After a few weeks away from my CIMA studies I am finally back into full pledge again.  The issue being not currently working in the field day in day out so I generally learn something but without using it everyday its hard to retain.

This brings me onto this thread.  Basically I am trying to secure a placement (unpaid - I know its hard times) so that I can submerge myself in accountancy.  If anybody knows their firm/workplace needs somewhat of dogs body please reply.

Obviously location is an important note - currently reside in Warrington, NW England so Manchester, Chester, Liverpool probably the best sites.

Due to other work restraints I have to limit this to one day for the time but free labour is never a bad thing.

Hopefully there may be some help at hand.  At the very least it will give me more of an insight to how I enjoy the role.

Thank you to everyone in advance as I know from many threads work is thin on the ground at the moment.  Good Luck to all.

Local accountancy

I would try a few local accountancy firms. They will often do charity accounts at cost or below and if you volunteer they might be able to offer you work. I wouldn't go for large companies as Charities tend to be put off by their costs.

Alternativelt try a few local organisations. I used to do The local Samaritans accounts. They are often crying out for a helping hand.

Re: Local Accountancy

Thanks for the information.  The next avenue was to contact local firms so I am going to get letters/e-mails sent out and see what replies I get.

voluntary work...

MD,

May I enquire as to what stage of CIMA you are at? And what is your experience level?

Experience

Barry

Currently I am on the Certificate as I have really only just started with CIMA.  I've passed one of the modules thusfar.

Going hand in hand with this my experience in accounting is limited and therefore in any unpaid work I do I will be wanting to work from the bottom up.  I have however have some project management experience in the NHS.

Due to the limited experience it is difficult to secure paid work so is why I am willing to take upaid work.  Basically it is a complete change of career from Exercise Science which is what I did in the NHS.  In order to increase my skills I am looking to do a book-keeping course with Kaplan in the New Year which hopefully will improve my chances of employment also.

Thanks for the reply. Hope this answers the question.

MD

Thanks for reply. I was hoping to have had some work for you, but the position has changed.

I wish you good luck.

Charities

Hi MD

Have you thought of the charity/non-profit sector? If you search for 'charity jobs' there are various recruitment websites which have volunteer posts listed.

You could also consider becoming a trustee of a charity - this looks good on the CV and will help with the professional experience aspect of your CIMA qualification. Your project management experience is likely to be in demand here, although you probably won't get much experience of accountancy as such.

My local CVS has a community accountant whose role is to help local organisations with their finance issues. I see there is a branch in Warrington so that may be a good place to start - even if they are not looking for volunteers themselves they will have contact details of local organisations.

Best wishes
