Can we answer the practical question paper online in an excel sheet?

Many of us use excel in our daily life either as a student or in our workplace.

The practical questions which are asked in Financial and Performance papers are much standardized. They are either in a tabular format or in a column format which is in reality how we face as management accountants.

If CIMA can arrange to conduct these examinations on a PC using MS Excel isn’t it going to benefit both the students as well as the institute?

01. A "read-only" type of question paper can be generated in Excel and each tab dedicated for a question.

02. This will help students avoid repeating the question labels in answers as they can straight away develop a format for the answers by pasting most of the content from the question paper. Ex income statement.

03. They can save lot of time and this can also be compensated by answering many more questions thereby testing the student's abilities more.

04. This would be "real world" experience for the students as they would face such scenarios in the corporate world.

05. The examination centres of course can provide such facilities as they would have the computer labs and cyber facilities.

06. This would benefit both students and the institute as this would add lot of value to the very global CIMA qualification as we go more paper friendly and use IT to the best of its benefits.

Please leave your suggestions and comments and what you think if this could be possible and what challenges we as students and the institute can face.

Also can some one from the institute let us know if any such developments are in progress and if not is there any such feasibility for such IT enabled enhancements.

Thanks, Abdul

Extending PC based exams

Thank you for your interesting observations on the value of extending PC based exams.

At CIMA we do continually strive for improvement, including in the examinations process. As part of these developments we now offer the T4 Case Study on PC in both March and September as well as paper exams in May and November. We are currently piloting PC based examinations for resits at Strategic level in the UK (initially September 2010 and March 2011); if these pilots are successful, we will seek to extend them further.

Interestingly the F3 examiner will be writing an article on how to use Excel efficiently when sitting PC based exams - look out for this in the Study Notes  section of FM early next year.

Good luck with your exams

Good Idea

Yeah ... I read Abdul's proposal and I too feel it's a nice thing :-) .... If I were not wrong, I think all of the CFA Institute exams are also examined by cumputer based exams. but I'm concerned about two issues ... individual big tuition institutes may dominate the market and would try to mitigate the small players [already I see in some of the 'major' CIMA tuition providers' websites that they state, those who take a course from them will be given priority when allocating exam places (computers) ... second priority would be the students who took a course with them earlier and if more places left, then only "OTHER" (students who had their tuition with somewhere else) students will be offered a place] - this is a bad example I guess ... I can understand that CIMA is incapable of setting-up PC's for the exams like paper based exams ... but something should be done for this I think .... 2nd issue is - with CIMA itself ... after going "most papers CBAs", CIMA can reduce the exam fees .... but, I probably hope that there will be an increase in exam fees .... Don't know how to do management accounting for this economics .... lol
