T4 Practical Experience Record

I am a little unclear on how to record months spent in basic, core and supplementary areas.

For example in my current role which I have been in for 24 months, I am responsible for aspects from all three areas. How do I go about allocating months to each?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

T4 Practical Experience Record

Hi Caroline,

The way to record it is to equally divide the 24 months across each board e.g

9 months basic, 3 months supplementary, and 12 months core, because if you put 24 months each the years will overlap.

I do hope that this helps.

T4 Practical Experience Record

So, to clarify, do I need to make a judgement as to how much of my time is spent in each area? For example if I spend roughly a half of all my time performing 'supplementary area' tasks, I would put down 12 months for supplementary. Is this correct?

T4

Hiya,

Yes this this is correct you need to have 18 months in the core area and the remaining 18 months can be a mixture of basic and supplementary.

I do hope that this helps.

Thanks

Yes that helps thank you.

T4 part A

Hi Yetunde,

Are there any mock examples of what you are expecting to see for recording this experience?

I have read the above but im not sure I fully understand how its supposed to be detailed.

Thanks in advance.

Emma

T4 part A

Hi Emma,

We do not have any mock examples, however depending on where you are located we do have career profile workshops that you can attend, free of charge for guidance.

Dates

I am also unsure as to whether CIMA require the exact dates of employment or whether a month and year is enough?

Problems

Every time I try to complete mine it just says the server is busy and kicks me out, happened on different days at more that one time!

Anyone else?

Dates

Hi Caroline,

I can confirm that a month and year is fine as long as there are no gaps.

Minor Employments

Hello there

My 3 years immediately after uni were spent either working, looking for work or overseas travel. During this heady time I must have had around 10 employments, and this was now 15 years ago. I understand that we must specify every period of employment and unemployment since leaving education, and I understand that irrelevant employments need only be briefly mentioned, however  I want to ask if, for the sake of clarity, it would be acceptable to group this time and avoid the need to break down each period separately?

Thanks

 James

Previous employments

I have worked for the same company for 30 months, but in different areas and for different line managers. Do I need a proposer and seconder for each of these areas and times? If I have a proposer and seconder that cover around 24 months of this period, will getting just my old line managers to sign be suitable?

Also if we need multiple proposers etc, do we need total duplicate forms, or jsut get them to sign a separate proposer/seconder page and include together with the other pages?

Practical Experience

Hello everyone,

James- You are only required to note non-relevant experience in the employment summary section, you do not need to list this in your Extended CV.

You will need to break down where you were for the months and years when you left university, the assessors will not accept a grouping.

David- You need to have someone that had direct knowledge of your work sign your application off, if you had someone within the company that knew what you were doing within various roles, then you can use them, if not then you will need to get each role signed off separately.

You only ever need one proposer, this should be your most recent employer and then print off more forms for however many seconders you need to make the total 36months.

I hope this helps

Beth

and finally...

Does the required 18 months in the core area have to be included in the verified 36 months?

18 months core experience

Hi Caroline,

Yes, your mandatory 18 months core experience need to be included in the 36 months. You can submit more than that of course.

I hope this helps!

Structure of detailed record of experience

Hi there,

I have more than 36 months' experience but all in 1 role. I am a little unclear on the best way to structure my detailed record of experience. The guidance on the 'Detailed CV' Word document available on CIMA's website states that the PER (Areas 1 - 3) shouldn't be used as headings to structure this section, although to me this seems the most obvious structure to adopt, particularly as I am not separating my record into different roles. Can you give any suggestions on this?

Thanks.

PER Structure

The structure of the PER is the one thing that I found really hard to get to grips with, so I can sympathise with Margaret.

I had my PER accepted earlier this month, and I wrote it exactly as an extended CV.  Job 1: company xxx, job title, person reporting to, dates employed as header info, then details of what I did, why it was important, who benefitted, etc.  It came to just over 7 pages, and was accepted without any issues. I had originally started with running through the basic, core, supplementary areas, then scrapped it in favour of a CV format.

There is an official response at http://community.cimaglobal.com/discussions/practical-experience/word-pa... if you want.  It came too late for me, but should prove useful for others.

I would question what you are meaning when you state "I am not separating my record into differrent roles".  If you're saying that the roles overlap and you were going to blend the roles together, that's fine, although the suggested format, above, is to do record your roles seperately; if you were meaning that, since you have 36 months experience in your current role you were not going to mention your other roles, then you should be aware that CIMA want ALL your relevant experience listed in the PER, not just the experience you are getting signed off by your employer(s).

Hope that helps.

Core Experience

HiI have two years experience in one specific role but it only falls under one point of the core experience; 2c. Management reporting for decision making. All my other experience is either basic or supplementary. Will this be sufficient for the 18 months core or do I need a broader range of experience? Thanks

Jade

Core experience

Hi Jade,

You really need to be able to demonstrate that you have experience of at least 4 of the tasks that fall in the core area to stand a realistic chance of being successful.

Having said that, if you meet the minimum requirements i.e. you have 36 months experience including 18 months in the core area, I would recommend that you submit your application for assessment. The assessors will either be able to identify experience that might fall into one of the other core areas or provide advice that will help you identify what other experience you need to gain.

Best wishes

T4 Practical Expreince

Hi,

I am little unclear what to write in the Total No. of Employees in our Co./Deptt/Turnover of Our Co. I am working as Dy.  Mgr.(F&A) in Steel Authority of India Limited(SAIL). SAIL has five integrated steel plants, three special plants, and one subsidiary in different parts of the India. I am working in one of the Integrated Steel Plants namely Bokaro Steel Plant.

Partiulars  SAIL  Bokaro Steel Plant
 Total No. of Employees(appx.)  120,000  24,000
 Turnover(Appx.)-F.Y-2009-10(In GBP'000)  5,858,000  1,600,000
 Total No. of Employees in F&A Deptt.(Appx.)  3,000  400

Pl. advice which figure should be filled in the Carrear Profile of Practical Experience.

Ramesh Chandra

Outcomes?

I am a bit confused on writing this to say what the outcomes of of each job aspect as it states to mention in the guidance.

e.g.  for budget setting the only outcome I can think of is the budget was set...what else can you say?

.

Ramesh - I'd probably go with the SAIL figures, as that is the company you work for, not a subsidiary as such.  Hopefully someone from CIMA will confirm, but otherwise I'd go with that.

Dave - There's not a lot you can add in some cases, is there?  On my application I went with "...the budget was subsequently presented to the board of directors and approved late in 2009".  At least makes it clear who the budget was done for, and that it was approved.

Non-financial job: practical experience vs. skills development

I have enough financial experience, but my best skills development examples come from a non-financial job for an NGO.

Shall I include this non-financial job in my detailed record of practical experience or not?

18 months Core experience

Hi,

I would have a question - when I have the 18 months of core experience in two different companies, is that acceptable?

Thanks,

Core experience

Hi Erika

That is fine - for your application you will need to get a signature from someone from each company to approve the work that you carried out.

A list of FAQs are available here - I suggest that you read these for more guidance.

Past Work Experience Issue

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

By the end of the year (when with a little luck I'll have passed T4 part b) I'll have 27 months experience at my current job.  Most of it is in core; some is in basic experience.

Prior to taking up my current role, I worked at a bank for 8 years.  My roles incuded projects, assessing customer credit and property risks and using more IT systems than I care to think of.  Is it likely this work will be acceptable to make up my remaining experence requirements?

If yes, my direct manager was not a qualified accountant.  There is a more senior manager who is qualified.  Who should I approach to be the seconder for that part of my form?

Thanks in advance.

Past Work Experience Issue

Hi Julyan,

You will need to take a look at the breakdown of the PER requirements to determine whether you carried out any of the tasks required during your role in the bank.

The requirements can be found in the PER Brochure on our website via the link below.

http://www.cimaglobal.com/en-gb/Students/2010-professional-qualification/Test-of-professional-competence-in-management-accounting/Record-your-practical-experience/

Also your proposer/seconder do not need to be CIMA qualified or a qualified accountant, they should be a colleague more senior to you who has direct knowledge of the work that you did or do.

PER

Hi,

For section 3 I have written with reference to just one job that I have been in for 4.5 years. In my previous jobs  I did not do anything accounting based; I am therefore correct in thinking that I do not need to write about these?

Thanks,

Krunal

word count

Does anyone know how long thw PER is expected to be?  Just filling in my work experience online and it says "if you need more than 16,000 characters (5 A4 pages) please use the next box.

16,000 characters?!  That's immense!  I'm filling it in using my CV as a basis - i.e list my job role and explain it in futher detail.  I've completed my first job and got to about 1000 words.  Is this enough?

word count

I recently submitted mine and it was just over 4000 words or 20,000 characters in total (covering 5 roles and 13 years). I have had it approved by one assessor so far............

Seconder for my practical experience

I have 9 years’ experience in current employment as chief accountant and reporting directly to General Manager, can I include General manager as a proposer and operation manager ( i am not directly reporting to him)  as seconder in recording my practical experience  or I have to find a seconder in my previous employment to whom , I was directly reporting ?
